Pekin’s favorite son gets the theatrical treatment in a new play making its premiere in Pekin on October 3 as part of the city’s bicentennial celebrations.
The play reading offers the audience a fly-on-the-wall view of a fictional interview just days before Senator Everett Dirksen death in 1969. Playwright Wade Dooley, a central Illinois native, uses Dirksen’s own words from decades of speeches and interviews to look back on the senator’s legacy and the things he loves-all while grappling with tough questions about faith, the future, and opportunity for all.
It stars Pekin Community High School Distinguished Alumni award-winner Larry Kenney and Nikki Romain, the co-founder of Peoria-based ART, Inc.
The reading will be performed Thursday, October 3, at the F.M. Peterson Theater at Pekin Community High School beginning at 6pm. Doors open at 5:15pm. The event, which includes welcoming remarks and an intermission, will conclude by 8pm.
Tickets are $10 if purchased online before the event, or $15 at the door.
