“We need in every community
a group of angelic troublemakers.”
Bayard Rustin
Activist. Pacifist. Organizer. Pioneer.
Bayard Rustin has been called the “unknown hero of the civil rights movement.” Now, as Americans reflect on and celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Rustin’s legacy of advocacy is being honored, including his roles as a leader of the first Freedom Rides in the 1940s, a mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1950s, and chief architect of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
Join us at the Peoria Riverfront Museum for a reception, panel discussion, and screening of the award-winning documentary Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin, which the New York Times calls an “excellent documentary profile” that “tells his entire story, informatively and entertainingly, via archival footage and interviews with those who knew him.”
An in-person panel featuring Rustin’s longtime life partner Walter Naegle and documentary producers Bennett Singer and Mridu Chandra will share more stories about his life, his struggles, and his advocacy for peace, racial and economic justice, LGBTQ equality, and global human rights.
